Greetings, Greenville team! Our Spring Break trip planning is coming along nicely...we depart in less than 20 DAYS!! At our last participant meeting, we talked about the value of volunteering, indirect versus direct service, and the mission statements of our service organizations. In Greenville, we will be doing both direct and indirect service--meaning we will both be interacting with people AND performing labor-based service. The organizations that we will be serving with include Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army, Greater Greenville Housing Revitalization Association, WWISCAA, and Mississippi Action for Community Education. At the last meeting, we examined and discussed these organizations' mission statements, which deal primarily with creating a more educated, sustainable, and safer Greenville. We even pointed out values within these statements that we could get behind and focus on for our Spring Break experience.
Finally, our team came up with our own trip mission statement that encompasses our goals and values for the entire experience:
“To promote honesty, love for community, respect, reliability, and education through hands-on experience filled with engaged learning, fun, and service to and from Greenville, Mississippi, as we focuse on our theme of Rural Poverty in order to develop a more equitable, sustainable, and understanding world.”
Even though it’s long, we think it encompasses our attitude toward our Spring Break experience and the people we will encounter. As your fellow Volunteers, we are so excited to serve with you! Until next time!
